Production

This page is dedicated to the production process of the AE86. I will update this page as I gain more knowledge on the matter. There will be sources mentioned when ever I can. Some sources (e.g. forums) may have multiple or conflicting information, so feel free to dive deeper if you want to. I want to make clear, that all the information on this page is gathered by myself with help of my friends and strangers in form of direct messages on my social accounts or through the comments section on my blog. There is no guarantee of the correctness and completeness of the data shown.

The Manufacturing Plants

The AE85 and AE86 cars were built at two locations in Japan and shipped to world wide markets. The vehicle identification plate inside the engine bay as well as the chassis frame code or VIN indicate in which plant the vehicle was built in.

The Tahara plant (jp. トヨタ自動車 田原工場) is located in Aichi and produced the most AE85 and AE86 during its time. The overseas cars were built here as it sits at the Mikawa Bay. A total of 324,057 units of both body styles left this plant between 1982 and 1987. The plates would have an A51 - A55 for the Plant section. This plant still operates today.1

The second plant was the Higashi-Fuji Plant (jp. 関東自動車工業 東富士工場) in Shizuoka. During the production of the 8th generation of the Corolla series, this factory was owned by the Kanto Auto Works Ltd.. This company merged in July 2012 into the Toyota Motor East Japan company (jp. トヨタ自動車東日本) before it was shut down in 2021.2 3 Toyota is building a Connected City, named Woven City, as a large-scale demonstration site for autonomous driving among other things. The plates will have an M21 or M22 for this plant.4

Total number of units produced

This table shows how many AE85 and AE86 were built. You can read the total amount of units per plant on the right side, the total number of units per body type at the bottom and the total units overall at the bottom right corner. The production numbers are derived from a Toyota service software which shows the last chassis frame numbers leaving the factories each month (see here).

AE85 AE86 Total per Plant
Tahara Plant 38,461 285,596 324,057
Higashi Fuji Plant 40,317 79,272 119,589
Total per variant 78,778 364,868 443,646

The chart below displays the production of these models per month and year.

The data in this area chart is inofficial as we don't know if the orders left the facilities in the same order as their identification numbers. An order can take longer in the facilities depending on options and thus it is most likely not accurate. Thus the some data are just an approximation based on assumptions.

Last Frame Numbers Leaving the Facilities

These tables show the last chassis frame numbers leaving both facilities. They have been copied from the source without alteration. The Sr column denotes the plants in which the cars were built. Here, 00 means Tahara plant and 50 means Higashi Fuji plant.5

Please note the last frame number leaving the M-plant on December 1982. It is higher than the last number of March 1983. At least one car has left the facility before official sales. The car(s) could be released that early for various reasons. Maybe for revealing the new body types in a car show or for marketing and testing reasons. The data on this page treats the cars made in 1982 as if they were released in March 1983.
